Real World Math

This month, our class has been working on "real world" applications of math, including money and finance skills.

Among other materials, we are using an independent living simulation program in which we study money, filling out a time card, calculating taxes, budgeting, writing checks, and more.

The students are enjoying applying what they've learned to real life situations.

I will have a special wrap-up summer activity for the students at the end of this week. Have a wonderful summer!

Measuring with Google Earth

Today, we calculated various measurements on places around the world using the Google Earth computer program. Locations the students chose included the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Gulf of Mexico, the Hawaiian island of Maui, and Mount McKinley in Alaska. The students worked on different measurement tasks based on their individual math goals.

Students, please remember that:

Area = Length x Width

Perimeter = the sum of the lengths of all the sides (add all the sides together)

In addition to our Math-U-See curriculum, this week we are exploring various aspects of measurement. In this activity, we created visual models of area and perimeter using various pieces of artwork.
